Terrill Associated Press Detoit Shock coach Bill Laimbeer talks to his team during practice on Thursday in Los Angeles. Shock, Sparks set for WNBA Finals The Detroit Shock aren't a typical Eastern Conference team. They like to run as much as the two-time WNBA champion Los Angeles Sparks do. The Sparks' previous championships came against Charlotte and New York, teams that play slow-down, half-court games like most teams in the East.

This season, the Sparks defeated uptempo teams Minnesota and Sacramento to reach the WNBA Finals, and they look forward to matching Detroit's speed when the best-of-three series opens tonight at Staples Center. The championship series matches the league's two top teams and former NBA rivals Michael Cooper and Bill Laimbeer, who have a prickly relationship. 'Fire Turbeville' site popular among Auburn fans It didn't take long for the bloom to fall off the rose in the garden of Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville.

The Tigers have gone from a preseason No. 1 ranking in a couple of polls to an 0-2 start. They've been outscored 40-3 and are nowhere to be found in the rankings. A new Web site has blossomed which means Tuberville joins Florida's Ron Zook as the only coaches in the SEC with those type Web sites. According to an Associated Press report, the Tuberville site got 5,000 hits the first day, which is several thousand more than the Tigers' defense has put on the opposition in two games.

Tuberville said he's too busy trying to figure a way to beat Vanderbilt this week to worry about some Web site. "I've made it a policy not to read the Internet, computers and newspapers," he said. "I really don't have time. I haven't even turned my computer on." He may need to turn on the running game to beat Vandy. In the 17-3 loss to Georgia Tech this past Saturday, Carnell Williams ran for 7 yards on the first play.

On the next 37 carries, Auburn gained 33 yards. STANDING OVATION: Coaches and players don't often get standing ovations after a loss, but Alabama got one Saturday night following the 20-13 loss to No. 1 ranked Oklahoma. For first- Alabama coach Mike Shula, who played for the Crimson Tide, "it was a neat feeling." "There was some degree of frustration after not playing as well as we could have," he said. "But I had people who have been going to games for 25 years coming up to me saying that was the loudest they've ever heard Bryant-Denny Stadium.

It made us feel great the fans felt that way." I CLARETT CONSIDERATIONS: Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett is considering suing the NFL to overturn the rule that says league teams may not draft a player until he has completed three years of college. Clarett, who would have been a sophomore this season, could have a long wait for the pros, after being suspended for this season. Alabama's Shula and Kentucky head coach Rich Brooks coached in the NFL and had this to say about the possi- SEC notebook Gary McCann The Herald ble challenge. "It looks like the system is working right now," Shula said. "We know it's different in other sports for kids to come out early.

It's more difficult for a guy to come out at a younger age in this sport, because of the contact and kids still growing and the maturity factor." "I think the rule might change," Brooks said, "but I don't think it's good for the NFL or college football. All of a sudden, the NFL doesn't get as good a read on a kid and there will be a lot more mistakes. I'd say 95 to 98 percent of the players in college need an extra year. It's like a double negative." HOLTZ FUNNY OF THE WEEK: Asked what the options were to get his receivers to catch the ball better they've dropped 17 passes in two games South Carolina coach Lou Holtz said: "We've met and we've talked about it. The first solution was a gun." SPEAKING OF DROPS: Holtz was asked if he'd consider other means, including a sports psychologist, to help his receivers.

Holtz said he "didn't think so" when it came to the psychologist, but said he'd consider "putting them in a relaxation period." Before most home games last year, Holtz had the players lie on the locker room floor in the dark and asked them to visualize how they could do something positive to help the team win. "It gets you where you're calm and you know what you want to do," wide receiver Troy Williamson said. Holtz is perplexed by the miscues. "The problem is, we don't drop them in practice," Holtz said. "We caught passes this fall far better than we ever have.

I don't know what it is. "You can't say they've got to practice harder or focus better in practice, because they've done that. But we have to address this." Quarterback Dondrial Pinkins has completed a respectable 25 of 58 passes for 347 yards and two TDs. Add in most or all of those 17 drops, and his numbers would be fantastic. POINTS: Georgia coach Mark Richt said Wednesday that wide receiver Fred Gibson (hamstring) did not practice the past two days and is not likely to play Saturday against South Carolina The SEC is 11-7 against NCAA Division I-A teams so far, after winning 93 of 121 non-league games the past three seasons Auburn ranks No.

116th nationally in total I yards and No. 117 in scoring. Contact Gary McCann at 329-4074 or CFL GM: Maurice Clarett should stay in school By Rusty Miller The Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio If Maurice Clarett wants to play in the Canadian Football League, he'll have to make the first call. The Montreal Alouettes own the CFL rights to the suspended Ohio State running back, but general manager Jim Popp won't pick up the phone to start negotiations. "If he has any intent of giving up college hires an agent and automatically becomes a professional or it is deemed he can't play in college anymore then this organization will wait for him to contact us," Popp said Thursday.

Indeed, Popp thinks Clarett should stay in school and weather the season-long penalty handed down Wednesday. "I'm a true believer that all players should try to get their college education," Popp said. "They can only play pro football so long. He needs to get his degree. That's the best thing that can happen to him." It's among Clarett's options.

22 Oakland at Denver, 9 p.m. NFL injuries NEW YORK (AP) The National Football League injury report for this week's games, as provided by the league: Sunday BUFFALO BILLS (1-0) AT JACKSONVILLE class while on scholarship, waiting for his suspension to end. He also could ask to be released from his scholarship and transfer to another school. Clarett would still have to sit out at least the mandated suspension season. If he moved to another Division I-A school, he would also have to sit out a transfer year.

If he transferred to a school in Divisions I-AA, II or III, though, he would not have to sit out the transfer year. The NFL isn't a possibility unless Clarett challenges the league's rule that requires players to be out of high school at least three years. The CFL doesn't have that sort of requirement. The Alouettes (9-2) have the league's best record and lead their division by 4 games. Then again, they also have two established tailbacks.
