Melba E. Freebolin

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (3)Melba E. Freebolin, age 91, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Chicago, IL, completed her earthly journey on July 31, 2024, at Ennoble Manor in Dubuque, while surrounded by her loving family. To honor Melba’s life, her Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 225 West 10th Street in Dubuque, with Pastor Kaity Kemp officiating. Family and friends of Melba are invited to join in fellowship for one hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment will be in the First Congregational United Church of Christ Mausoleum. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Melba’s family.

Melba was born on May 19, 1933, in Oak Park, IL, a daughter to Oscar and Elizabeth (Edwards) Frick. She was raised to possess a strong devotion to family which she continued to carry proudly throughout her entire life. Melba also had a natural ability to teach others and meet them right where they were in all circ*mstances. She was an elementary school teacher for many years, but eventually Melba found her greatest joy was to be found in devoting her time and talents with the blind society. She made many wonderful friends and built long-lasting relationships along the way and always understood that her impact on the world around her was all so real and very tangible.

Melba enjoyed her time away from work as well and over the years always found time to fit traveling and camping with her loved ones into her busy schedule. Whether it was touring out west, or simply settling into a more local campground for the weekend, Melba treasured the downtime while surrounded by those who were dear to her heart. She was also blessed with a little time to spend with her cross stitch needle in hand and a few of her beautiful creations remain today to help those left behind to remember the quiet and simple moments when Melba found both contentment and joy. She will also be fondly remembered for her love of music playing in the background whenever possible. Too much Johnny Cash was never going to be an issue and any chance to relax and refresh the day was always a welcomed event. Melba was always fun to be with. She was humorous and was always there for a good laugh. We are going to miss our dear sweet Melba’s physical presence in our daily lives moving forward, but we know that she fought the good fight and her eternal rewards were merely awaiting her earthly body to surrender her brilliant soul over to the Lord’s hands. Thank you, Melba, for leading by example, leaving behind a legacy of love, and for always reminding us that family and friends are truly a gift in this life and to be appreciated and honored at every opportunity. May the Lord bless you and keep you in His grace-filled arms until we meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Melba include,

her loving son,
Fredrick “Fred” (Jill) Freebolin, Dubuque, IA;

her adored granddaughter,
McKenna (fiancé Anthony “Tony” Griebel) Freebolin, Bellevue, IA;

her nieces,
Marcia and Maureen Wilsey;

her nephew,
Marcus (Kathy Ocher) Wilsey;

her grandnieces,
Jenna Brown and Dana (Chris) Bokhari;

her grandnephew, Zachary Brewer;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Melba was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, James Frick; and her sister, Elizabeth (Jack) Wilsey.

Melba’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Ennoble Manor and Care Initiatives Hospice for all of their professional and compassionate care.

Ellen Butler

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (7)Ellen Butler, 84, of Dubuque, died Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

In lieu of services, the family will gather at a later date for a celebration of Ellen’s life.

Ellen was born on February 11, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa. A proud Irish North-ender, Ellen was one of seven children born to Dwight Dominy and Margery (Phillips) Dominy.

Ellen and her siblings roamed the North-end and attended Sacred Heart school. Ellen graduated in 1958 from St. Joseph’s Academy where she met many lifelong friends, who would always be “the girls”. After graduation, Ellen was employed as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. While there, she met Burton Butler, whom she married in 1961.

Ellen and Burt’s first adventure together started when Burt was drafted into the Army and they moved to Edgewood, Maryland. While there, they had their first son, Brett (Laura) Butler (Bernard, IA). They returned to Dubuque and had two more children, Beth (Terry) Schaul (the best one, Oconomowoc, WI) and Bart (Elizabeth) Butler (Celebration, FL).

Ellen and Burt were a great team. Ellen spent much of her adult life raising her children and caring for aging parents in both families. Ellen loved fiercely and would do anything for those she loved. She volunteered her time as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader for many years when her kids were young, and later as a puppeteer for Kids On The Block for ten years. She worked at Stonehill Care Center’s Development Office for many years and donated countless hours to volunteering there.

Ellen was known for her spark for life. Whether it was shouts of “what’s trump” during monthly card club gatherings, placing Happy Birthday signs around Dubuque for Burt’s 40th or “decorating” a friend’s house after the Packers beat the Bears, Ellen had fun and made everyone around her smile. Ellen and Burt loved to travel, spending lots of time on the road visiting their kids and many trips to visit Ellen’s sister in Lake Havasu, Arizona.

Ellen loved being a wife and mom, and beloved “Auntie El” to many nieces and nephews. But she absolutely adored being a grandma to her five grandchildren, Morgan and Benjamin Butler; Calvin and Olivia Schaul; and Fiona Butler. Grandma, Meme, Nonnie… she answered to these names with more love and joy than imaginable. Those grandkids adore her in return.

Ellen is survived by her husband, Burt, her three children, five grandchildren, sister Mary (Dick) Haupert, brother David (Ruth) Dominy, sister-in-law Janice (Bob) Miller and brother-in-law Dean (Patti) Butler.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother James Dominy, sister Jane (Ken) Dalsing, brother Phillip Dominy, brothers-in-law Dick Haupert and Bob Miller, and sisters-in-law Patti Butler and Jeanette Butler. She looks forward to roaming with them again in heaven.

Ellen’s family is very thankful to the wonderful staff at Stonehill Care Center and Hospice of Dubuque.

Terry R. Harris

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (15)Terry Rhey Harris, 85, of Peosta, IA passed away on August 10, 2024. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 pm Sunday, August 18, 2024, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. A private funeral service will be held. In September or October, there will be a celebration of life for Terry; the details will be announced at a later date.

Terry was born on October 18, 1938 and was the oldest son of Floyd “Bucky” and Verena (Bemis) Harris. Terry was raised on a small farm on West 32ndStreet in Dubuque, IA. Terry was a 1956 graduate of Senior High School where he excelled as a multi-sport athlete.

Terry continued his education and athletic career at Drake University on a football scholarship. While at Drake, he competed in the 1958 Sun Bowl game in El Paso, TX. He then returned to the University of Dubuque and excelled in basketball and football while completing his Education degree.

It was during his time at University of Dubuque that he met the love of his life, Susan Casper. They were married on April 9, 1960. Upon graduation from UD, Terry began his teaching career at Jefferson Junior High and then Washington Junior High as a Physical Education and Science teacher. Terry taught and mentored thousands of middle school students in his 38 years of teaching and coaching. He also refereed numerous sports throughout his career. It was an everyday occurrence for Terry to cross paths with his former students who would always greet him as “Mr. Harris” or “Coach”.

Terry was a great competitor in life. He excelled in teaching, coaching, athletics, business, and life in general. He always brought out the best in people and encouraged them to exceed expectations. That included his children and grandchildren whom he loved dearly and always pushed them to be their best in school, athletics, and careers. He set the example to be kind to others and always put others ahead of himself.

Terry was well known as one of the best fast pitch softball pitchers in the tri-state area and pitched for many different teams. He was inducted into the Dubuque County Fast Pitch Hall of Fame in 1981. He was also inducted into the Senior High School Hall of Fame in 1998.

In 1979, while still teaching and coaching full-time, Terry started S&H Golf Cars, a Yamaha Golf Car business with the Sindt brothers, Vern and Lenny. He continued that partnership until he retired from teaching in 1998 and purchased all of the business, which currently operates as Harris Golf Cars in Dubuque and four states. The company was his passion for the past 45 years up to the day he passed.

Terry loved golf and was a charter member at Thunder Hills Country Club where he made lifelong friends and enjoyed many experiences through the years. He was also a member of the beloved “One More Club” at Thunder Hills that met weekly after men’s league to solve the world’s problems.

Gary Pfohl

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (48)Gary “Grease Monkey, Harvey, Papa, Pops” Pfohl of Dubuque, IA passed on to another adventure on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, surrounded by his loud and loving family after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.

Gary was born to Delbert and Helen (Winders) Pfohl on January 21st, 1951. He attended Dubuque Senior High School, begrudgingly, and entered the workforce early in life. Gary briefly worked at NAPA Auto Parts, then moved on to be an auto mechanic at Herbst Auto Service for a majority of his working life. Gary was well-known to be an outstanding mechanic who could fix anything. He was a “jack of all trades” and a master of all! He enjoyed woodworking as well, and continuously had several friends ask him to help in the building and renovating of their homes and businesses. When Gary was ready for something new, he moved on to work at J & J Tree Service, as well as J & J Pool, Spa, & Billiards. Between then and full retirement, he was found bartending and providing maintenance for various local places when they needed an extra hand. Gary had a hard time sitting still, and even up until the end, he was visually and audibly fixing things and servicing vehicles in his sleep.

In 1971, Gary married LuAnn Noel and had three perfect-ish daughters. Their first glimpse at perfection was Brenda (Jeremy) Duvel. Brenda brought two beautiful blessings into Gary’s life, Ryan (Courtney Westphal) Konrardy and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Konrardy. Next came the cliché middle child, Kelly “Tunie” (Jeremy-not the same one as Brenda) Giesemann. Tunie blessed Gary with three grandkids over the course of three decades, Alidia Mickelson, Kyrah Pfohl, and the most recent joy, Knox Giesemann. Finally, Gary and LuAnn had their third child, Julie Pfohl, who continues to be their favorite despite her moving over a thousand miles away. They later divorced but continued to partner together in trying to manage their adult daughters.

Gary met Teresa (Delaney) Pfohl in August of 2001 and began another wonderful chapter of his life. Teresa and Gary loved to spend as much time together as possible, and even took joy in coordinating their outfits, which his family lovingly enjoyed mocking. They had a wonderful time going on road cruises until they would get lost, although Teresa always knew her Mister Man would find their way home. On many of those cruises, they would seek out waterfalls, which Gary thoroughly enjoyed watching, as in a sense, he was always chasing them…the metaphor fits. Gary and Teresa also cherished spending some time during the winter in Florida, by Julie, where the drinking establishments flourished in their presence. Gary and Teresa were married June 28, 2016 and continued to love having their time together.

Gary was known to live life his own way. While his earlier years included more dangerous activities, such as driving a vehicle across the Mississippi River during a winter day, his later years included more peaceful, but fulfilling ventures. Over the years, Gary was an active member in the Dubuque Boat Club and the Loyal Order of the Moose. Gary very much enjoyed taking rides by the river in a quest to find bald eagles, and one time relished in the fact that he and Teresa counted over 300 by Frentress Lake. He also was a great baker, largely due to the fact that he had a monstrous sweet tooth and would bake another batch of cookies, despite the fact that he already had a counter full of other cookies. While Teresa was more of the cook, he was even able to teach her a few new recipes. You could also often catch Gary singing his favorite tunes at many establishments, where everyone there would beg him to sing his classic “Elvis” songs. Gary also always cherished his times camping with all of his campground buddies. Many would come to his campfire to have a co*cktail and hear the endless “Gary” jokes, as his mission was always to make everyone laugh and have a good time. He guaranteed that good time when he would break out his guitar and gut bucket to have some good ol’ singalongs around the fire.

Above all, Gary was far more caring than it may have seemed. What we really want people to remember is that he would help anyone at a drop of a hat. There were countless times when he would drop what he was doing to help a person in need; and many times, that person was a complete stranger. Whether it was helping them with their car, or helping them move something, he was wanting to help. His caring was most exemplified by the way he welcomed far more than his three girls into his home. It is a well-known fact that the magnet on the refrigerator that read “This is the home to 3 beautiful girls” would change to 4, then 5, and so on, as he loved and cared for so many of his daughter’s misfit friends and always made them know that they were welcome and safe in his home as well. Gary would be so patient with all of the girls taking over his house, but that may have contributed to why he spent so much time working in the garage.

In addition to his fun-filled family, other people left to carry on his memories are his sister Juanita (Don) Herbst, his brother Paul (Susan) Pfohl, his sister-in-law Nancy Pfohl, and their families. He also left behind six sisters-in-law: Jeri Jahries, Katie Wolbers, Jeannie Kerr, Sue Donley, Doris Dawson, and Mary Ingle and their families.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard Pfohl, as well as two sisters-in-law: Patricia Delaney and Connie Maiers, and three brothers-in-law: Joe Delaney, James Delaney, and John Delaney.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all of the wonderful healthcare professionals at the Intensive Care Unit, as well as the Cardiovascular Unit at MercyOne Hospital in Dubuque. The care that Gary and his family received during his final days was very supportive and exceptional.

Per Gary’s wishes, a party for his life will take place at the Dubuque Moose Lodge 355 on Sunday, August 25th. Family and friends may stop by anytime between 2 and 8 pm. A short dedication to Gary will occur at 5 pm, followed by some karaoke and dancing. The family is grateful for Tri-State Cremation Center for their help in coordinating Gary’s after-life care.

Online condolences for Gary’s family may be left at www.tristatecremationcenter.com

Floyd P. Bennett

Obituaries - Dubuque Today by the Dubuque Advertiser (49)Floyd P. Bennett, age 70, Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on August 1, 2024, at Dubuque Specialty Care, while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Floyd’s life, a private graveside service will be held at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Floyd’s family.

Floyd was born on January 11, 1954, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Floyd B. and Violet (Baker) Bennett. He was truly blessed to be one of the good one’s in this life and never had a foul word, or complained about anything, even when it would have easily been justified. Floyd made the world a better place simply by his presence within it and was so simultaneously humble that he would never have even acknowledged that fact in words, thoughts, or actions. Floyd was naturally gifted in the kitchen and spent his working career as a cook. He invested over twenty years with Bishop’s Buffet until they closed and then went on to spend another 14 years at the Diamond Jo Casino. He enjoyed creating delicious meals for others to savor and made countless friends along the way as well.

Floyd was known for his belly laugh and silly jokes for those who were near him most. His humor was contagious while his timing and delivery were impeccable. If Floyd was happy, those around him were soon to be also. He was also a devoted black belt in Tae Kwon Do and spent countless hours as a teacher at the Dubuque Karate Club sharing his skills and knowledge with others. Floyd was also a devoted uncle who faithfully and patiently waited for the weekend to arrive where you could be sure to find him treating his nieces and nephews out to a movie and treats whenever possible. His love for games of all sorts, especially cards, was also legendary. Never taking life too seriously, but always ready for a little friendly competition with anyone who was willing to pull a chair up to the table to test his abilities on any given day. Simply put, the world is a much lesser place today without Floyd’s light shining around those who knew and loved him. We will miss him dearly, remember him fondly, and will never forget the positive influence he has been on everyone who crossed his path. Thank you, Floyd, for keeping life uncomplicated and bringing your best to each day as it presents itself. May you find peace now in the loving arms of your Savior as we await our eternal reunion in time.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Floyd include,

his siblings,
Irene (Bill) Jackson, Dubuque, IA,
Nancy Funk, Dubuque, IA,
Phillip Bennett, Iowa City, IA,
and Beth Bennett, Iowa City, IA;

seven nieces and nephews;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Pat Bennett and Georgia (Paul) Olds.

Floyd’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Dubuque Specialty Care for all of their professional and compassionate care.
